The Culture Industry Manufactures Darkness, Not Light

Giovanni Pietro Bellori, writing his lives of the painters in 1672 and disliking his subject, described the method with the contempt of a man exposing a trick: Caravaggio shut his models in a room hung dark, admitted a single high shaft of light from a narrow aperture, and let the falloff do the rest. Bellori took this for a failure of intellect, a painter who could not conceive a figure without a body in front of him and could not compose a scene without extinguishing most of it. The description was exact and the verdict was wrong. What the Contarelli Chapel canvases of 1599 to 1600 establish, and what every cinematographer since has been paid to reproduce, is that illumination carries no meaning of its own. Ratios carry meaning. The hand that points across the tax collector's table in The Calling of Saint Matthew is not significant because it is bright; it is significant because the wall behind it has been sacrificed, because a large quantity of pictorial surface has been deliberately withheld from the eye so that a small quantity can be given to it. Caravaggio did not invent light. He invented a budget, and he spent it in one place.
The physiology underwrites the aesthetics with unusual precision. The vertebrate and invertebrate retina alike do not report absolute luminance; they report difference. Hartline and Ratliff, working through the 1950s on the compound eye of the horseshoe crab, demonstrated that an illuminated ommatidium suppresses the firing of its neighbours, so that the neural output of the eye is not a map of how much light is present but a map of where the light changes, edges sharpened and flat fields discarded before the signal has travelled an inch. Vision is a contrast engine, and it economises ruthlessly on the uniform. The consequence has been measured in the other direction as well: Wolfgang Metzger, in 1930, placed observers in front of a field of homogeneous light with no gradient and no edge, and found that the visual world did not become bright but simply ceased, a condition later confirmed by Cohen in 1957 as the Ganzfeld blank-out, in which subjects lose the sense of seeing at all and report a fog with no distance in it. Total illumination is not the maximum of vision. It is a functional blindness with the lights on.
The theatre worked this out industrially before the physiologists formalised it. For most of the history of European performance the auditorium was as lit as the stage, and the audience spent the evening looking at one another, which is what audiences do when nothing has been subtracted from them. The darkened house is a nineteenth-century engineering decision, given its definitive form when Wagner opened the Festspielhaus at Bayreuth in 1876 with the orchestra sunk out of sight and the hall extinguished, so that the only surviving object in the room was the one the management had built. This is chiaroscuro applied not to pigment but to a crowd. Fifteen hundred people were placed in shadow, at no small expense in gas and architecture, in order that a few illuminated bodies could acquire the density of meaning that the technique reliably confers. The audience was not merely watching the picture. The audience had become the dark ground of the picture.
Everything the culture industries have built since is an extension of that expenditure, and the accounting is unsentimental. Attention is not manufacturable. The waking day is bounded, the population is finite, and the total quantity of regard available to be distributed across all performers, athletes, presenters and singers alive at any moment is fixed within narrow limits. An industry operating under this constraint cannot increase the light. It can only deepen the shadow, and the deepening is its actual product. The mathematics of how the light concentrates was described by Barabási and Albert in 1999 as preferential attachment: in a growing network where new connections are made in proportion to the connections already held, the distribution of attention converges on a power law, a small number of nodes accumulating a share that no property intrinsic to them could justify. Salganik, Dodds and Watts tested this on culture directly in 2006, running fourteen thousand participants through an artificial music market split into parallel worlds with identical songs, and found that once participants could see what others had downloaded, inequality of success rose and predictability of success fell, the same track finishing near the top in one world and near the bottom in another. Quality set a floor and a ceiling. Everything between them was decided by the accident of who was lit first.
The promise of digital distribution was that this arithmetic could be repealed, that infinite shelf space would abolish the dark surround and let every catalogue item find its audience. Anita Elberse tested the proposition against sales data in 2008 and reported the opposite: as distribution widened, revenue concentrated further into the head, and the tail lengthened into a region of titles selling essentially nothing. Luminate's year-end report for 2023 counted more than 184 million tracks available across streaming services and found that roughly 158 million of them received fewer than a thousand plays across the entire year. That is not a market failure. That is the technique functioning at industrial scale: one hundred and fifty-eight million canvases painted over in black so that a few dozen faces can hold a hard-edged shaft. The obscurity is not what happens to the unsuccessful. The obscurity is the input.
The frame that clarifies the audience side of this is entomological. Insects around a street lamp are not, as the folklore has it, drawn to the flame by desire. Fabian and colleagues, in Nature Communications in 2024, filmed the trajectories at high speed and found that the animals turn their backs to the brightest source and hold that attitude, a reflex calibrated over evolutionary time to a world in which the brightest region was invariably the sky, which is why an artificial point source converts stable flight into an orbit and then into the ground. The mechanism is not attraction. It is orientation, working correctly, in an environment engineered to defeat it. Witherington and Bjorndal documented the marine version in 1991, hatchling loggerheads emerging from the sand and running toward the brightest horizon, which for a hundred million years was the sea and is now the car park. Falchi and colleagues established the scale of the new lighting condition in Science Advances in 2016: some eighty per cent of the world's population lives under skies degraded by artificial light, and around a third of humanity can no longer see the Milky Way at all. The galaxy has not moved. The ground against which it was legible has been abolished.
Broadcast television, whatever else may be charged against it, retained the ground. It closed down. There was a final programme, a national anthem, a test card and then hours of nothing, an enforced dark in which the day's viewing could acquire an edge. That interval has been deliberately removed. Netflix informed its shareholders in 2017 that among its competitors it counted sleep, and the statement should be read as an engineering specification rather than a boast: the objective is the elimination of the unlit interval, the countdown that begins before the credits, the next episode already running while the last shot is still resolving. The physiological cost has been measured. Chang, Aeschbach, Duffy and Czeisler reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2015 that participants reading from light-emitting screens in the hours before bed showed suppressed melatonin, circadian timing delayed by more than an hour and a half, and reduced alertness the following morning even after a full night in bed. The apparatus does not merely occupy your evening. It moves your internal midnight.
And here the technique turns on the industry that industrialised it, because a field of uniform brightness produces the Ganzfeld and nothing else. When every performer is available at all hours, when the archive is total and the feed never closes, the contrast collapses and the eye reports fog. The response has been to manufacture shadow by other means: the recommendation surface that shows you nine titles and buries ninety thousand, the release strategy that darkens the calendar around a premiere, the exclusivity window, the paywall, the algorithmic suppression of everything that is not currently being lit. What was once achieved with a black-hung room and a high aperture is now achieved with a ranking function. The Contarelli Chapel required a painter to decide what would be sacrificed. The catalogue requires no one to decide, which is why the sacrifice can be denied by everyone employed in making it.
You have felt the pull toward the brightest region of the room, and the literature has measured what that reflex does when the sky is no longer the brightest thing in it. The consoling reading, that the light might yet fall on you, that the tail might yet find its audience, that visibility is a good awaiting fairer distribution, misunderstands the physics of the medium it hopes to be admitted to. Light of this kind is not a substance to be shared out. It is a differential, and a differential requires a quantity of extinguished surface proportionate to the intensity achieved.
So the machinery is not withholding anything from you. It is using you. Your obscurity is not a queue; it is a raw material, extracted in bulk, and the face on the poster is legible precisely to the depth that you have been painted over.
